Ivano-Frankivsk (formerly Stanislaw) was named after the great Kamenian poet and writer Ivan Franko. This city holds so much history behind its walls that a visit must be high on the traveller's priority list.  It was in 1919 that the Western Ukrainian Peoples Republic was proclaimed and in 1962 the City changed its name to Ivano-Frankivsk. This city is built on history and the plight of the Ukrainian people. There is much tragedy here but there is also much history.
